JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Ten-digit dialing is now active in the Jacksonville region’s 904 area code.

According to the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), permissive 10-digit dialing is now active for customers using the 904 area code to prepare for the February 2024 launch of the region’s new 324 area code overlay.

Last year, the PSC approved the additional area code to accommodate the demand for new numbers in growing Jacksonville and surrounding communities.

“Permissive dialing provides a ‘get acquainted’ transition period before implementation of the new 324 area code in populous Duval County,” said PSC Chairman Andrew Fay.

“Residents and businesses will have plenty of time to prepare for the additional area code by reprogramming contacts and equipment.”

What you need to know:
A new area code, 324, was added to the existing 904 area code region through an overlay implementation plan approved by the PSC in May 2022. The new 324 area code will cover the same geographic boundaries as the current 904 area code.

Beginning in February 2024, existing telephone customers will keep their numbers, but new customers, or customers adding additional lines, can receive the new 324 area code.

During permissive dialing, customers are encouraged to dial the area code plus the seven-digit phone number to make local calls (10-digit dialing); calls will still be completed if the seven-digit telephone number is dialed.

Now is the time to ensure that all services, automatic dialing equipment, etc., recognize the new area code as valid and program all telephone numbers using 10 digits.

Permissive dialing for 904 ends on January 28, 2024, and mandatory 10-digit dialing will begin on January 29, 2024.
