Okaloosa schools celebrate American Founders’ Month with special events

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — The Okaloosa County School District  (OCSD) is joining schools across the nation this month in celebrating American Founders’ Month with events and activities honoring the nation’s Founding Fathers, Patriot Day, Constitution Day, and 9/11 Heroes’ Day.

According to the OCSD, the month-long observance highlights historical figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton, acknowledging their contributions to the creation of the United States. Schools across the district will engage in various educational activities to honor these key figures.

PATRIOT DAY
On September 11, the district will commemorate Patriot Day with remembrance ceremonies, patriotic pep rallies, and lunches with first responders and members of the military.

9/11 HEROES’ DAY
Middle school students enrolled in Civics Education and high school students enrolled in United States Government will receive a minimum of 45 minutes of instruction on 9/11 Heroes’ Day, focusing on the history and significance of the attacks on September 11, 2001.

CONSTITUTION DAY
Later in the month, on September 17, Constitution Day will be celebrated as students across Okaloosa County reflect on the signing of the U.S. Constitution 237 years ago. Teachers will provide lessons on the Constitution and discuss its enduring importance in safeguarding American freedoms.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM WEEK
During the final week of September, from September 23 to 27, students will observe Celebrate Freedom Week, starting each day by reciting the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution. Teachers will also incorporate resources from the National Archives and the Library of Congress to enhance students’ understanding of the Declaration of Independence and its role in the nation’s founding.
