Niceville Mayor Randall Wise laid to rest

Hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects to Niceville Mayor Randall Wise at the late mayor’s funeral held today at First Baptist Church of Niceville. Mayor Wise served as Niceville’s mayor from 1971 until his death on January 20. At the time of his death, Mayor Wise reportedly was the longest-serving mayor in Florida and the fourth-longest current serving mayor in the United States.

NICEVILLE, FLA – Hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects to Niceville Mayor Randall Wise at the late mayor’s funeral held today at First Baptist Church of Niceville.

Mayor Wise served as Niceville’s mayor from 1971 until his death on January 20. At the time of his death, Mayor Wise reportedly was the longest-serving mayor in Florida and the fourth-longest current serving mayor in the United States.

“Mayor Wise was a true public servant,” said Lannie Corbin, Niceville City Manager. “He loved serving the residents of Niceville and had a passion for this community. He has helped shape Niceville into what it is today. We are a better city and a better community because of him. He will be missed in more ways than we could count.”

Mayor Wise, who was was 89 years old, was recovering from a recent fall at the time of his death.

Mayor Wise was a constant and passionate advocate for the city he served and for the military. He served as an Honorary Commander at Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field and Duke Field. His drive for change and passion for Niceville will be a lasting part of his legacy.

He was an avid reader and Friend for Life of the Niceville Public Library. He has served on several boards and committees throughout the state, including a term as President of the Florida League of Cities. In 1997, the Florida League of Cities presented Mayor Wise the 20th Annual E. Harris Drew Award for his contributions to the cities of Florida.

Mayor Wise lain in state in a flag-draped coffin Jan. 22-23 at the Niceville Council Chambers. Many from the community and the surrounding area came by to honor him.

A special election will be held on April 14 to fill the 3.5 years remaining in the term of Mayor Wise. SEE RELATED STORY.
