Niceville Library calendar of events for April

The Niceville Public Library features a variety of activities for all ages. Here is the activities calendar for the month of April 2016:

Children’s Storytime – Storytime for children ages 3 – 5 years will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
April 1 – April Fool’s Day and Silly Stories
April 6 & 8 – Zoo Week
April 13 & 15 – National Library Week
April 20 & 22 – Earth Week
April 27 – Poetry Week

Teen Space – Make your voice heard! The library Teen Advisory Council is looking for new members to help plan programs for the Teen Space! Here’s your chance to share your ideas, plan teen programs and meet new friends. Plus, you can earn community service hours for Bright Futures Scholarships. Remember every Tuesday is Quiet/Study day In the Teen. Program Ideas? Stop by The Teen Office or e-mail Ms. Karen at khouston@okaloosa.lib.fl.us.
Fri., April 1 – Teen Advisory Meeting at 2:30 p.m.
Wed., April 20 – Teen Outdoor Get Together at 3 p.m.

Apr 4

Folksinging for all ages! – Legendary folksinger, storyteller, and autoharp virtuoso, Adam Miller, will perform a free concert of traditional American folksongs and autoharp instrumentals at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Niceville Community Center. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Call the Niceville Public Library at 850-279-4863 ext. 1504.

Scrabble Anyone? – The Niceville Public Library will be set up with Scrabble boards for the adult community to play and enjoy on Wednesday and April 20 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please keep in mind that you don’t have to be an expert to participate and all skill levels are welcome. So bring your friends or come on your own and join in the fun!

Apr 7

Baby Bookworms – This lapsit program consists of music, stories and rhymes especially chosen to build the bond between you and your child. The program is suited for children from birth to age 3. Please meet in YS program room 9:30 a.m. for Prewalkers, and 10:30 a.m. for Walkers on Thursday.

Apr 9

Book Club Girls’ Edition – For girls ages 9 – 12 years. To insure we have ample supplies for everyone, please register in YS or call to reserve your seat 279-4863 ext. 1514. Registration is required. Saturday at 10 a.m. – 12 noon.

April Library Celebrations: Come Celebrate With Us! April is D.E.A.R – Drop Everything and Read Month. Featuring National Library Week (theme is Libraries Transform)

Apr 13

Local Christian Author Book Discussion and Signing – Marilyn Turk will discuss her new book, The Gilded Curse and share her journey in becoming a published author. This free library program will be held in the Niceville Library on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Seating is limited. Please call the Library at 279-4863 ext. 1504 or email Lora at lglass@okaloosa.lib.fl.us to reserve a seat. Copies of her books will be available for purchase before and after the program.

Shelves to Shores – The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) and Niceville Library partner for “From Shelves to Shores: Winter Reading Challenge” which is a service-learning project for local children. Once a month, CBA will host an activity for children at the Niceville Library. The activities will include growing Spartina alterniflora in salt marsh nurseries and learning about the Choctawhatchee Bay through hands-on experiences. The program’s goal is to enhance our community’s understanding of the bay, their environment, and community service. We will meet on Thursday at 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. – 12 noon.

AARP Tax Assistance at the Library just around the corner! AARP volunteers will be here in the library to assist anyone in need of tax preparation. The schedule is: Sat. 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Wed. 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Fri. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. By appointments only – sign up book is located at the Reference Desk or call us at 279-4863 ext. 1504.

Apr 15

Legos at the Library – Friday from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. for ages 7 – 12 in our Youth Services program room. This month our theme will be Star Wars. Space is limited so registration is required. Please sign up in Youth Services or call 279-4863 ext. 1514.

Family Movie – The Library Youth Services will be hosting a movie for ages 6 + in the YS program room on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Reading Education Assistance Dogs – Reading is a wonderful opportunity for a child to build his or her imagination and begin to build skills for his or her future. Libraries are a wonderful resource, and Therapy Dogs can be a great way to help children discover how much fun their local library can be. Over time your child’s reading ability and confidence can improve, which will make them enjoy reading even more. Registration is required. Please sign up in YS program room. Reading will be on Tuesday at 4 p.m. – 6 pm.

Library Closures – The Library will be closed on Thursday for our Annual City of Niceville Employee Picnic and also on Friday, April 29 for County-wide Library Training Day.

Apr 23

Stor-Y-oga – We all know that children love to move, make noise, and get creative. Children also love a good story. So why not combine the two? And reading or telling a story as an introduction to a yoga sequence is a comfortable way for children to prepare for something new and helps provide a visual to engage them in creative movement. Youth Services will provide a program for children ages 3 – 5 in the Youth Services program room on Saturday at 10:30 am and a program for children ages 6 – 12 on Tuesday, April 26 at 6 p.m.

Color Yourself Calm!! – Join us for this free program for adults ages 18 +. This program will be in the Library on Tuesday at 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. Supplies will be provided as well as light refreshments and relaxing music. Space is limited so registration is required.
