Military operations to take place in bay, Gulf

(Military Operations, Niceville FL) – The 86th Fighter Weapons Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base will be conducting flight and boat operations Feb. 9-12 in Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, which may cause noise in the surrounding areas.

The operation is part of the 53rd Wing’s Weapon System Evaluation Program. Preparatory operations will take place Feb. 5-6.

During the operation, fighter aircraft will release munitions from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. approximately 20 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., 30 boats will be used as targets for fighter aircraft and helicopters flying mid to low level altitudes.

No weapons or ammunition will be used in the flights.

Some boat operators will be dressed in military uniforms and white costumes, and could be carrying rubber rifles painted in highly visible colors. Boats may also have fake guns and rocket launcher tubes.
