The Mastership Award is the highest honor available in the AGD and one of the most respected designations in the dental profession. This accomplishment meets the highest criteria for professional excellence. A dentist who has earned the designation “Master” of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD)—a big step up from Fellowship—has completed a structured and rigorous set of requirements involving all the dental disciplines. Masters have accepted the charge to keep abreast of advances in every aspect of dentistry for the benefit of patients and the betterment of dentistry. They serve as mentors and leaders to other dentists pursuing continuing dental education. They set examples in their communities with their hard work, concern and involvement.

To accomplish this, Wiebe and Broutin completed over a thousand hours of continuing dental education in the 16 disciplines of dentistry, including 400 hours dedicated to hands-on skills and techniques. They also successfully completed a written exam and then presented various cases of their work in the different disciplines to a panel of dentists.

Recipients of the Mastership award are entitled to the designation M.A.G.D. (Master, Academy of General Dentistry) as a part of their academic credentials. 1% of dentists achieve Mastership status in the Academy of General Dentistry and Internationally there are only 2,500 dentists ever to achieve this award.

The AGD is a professional association of more than 35,000 dentists dedicated to staying up-to-date and advanced in the profession through continuing education.  Founded in 1952, the AGD has grown to become the world’s second largest dental association, which is the only association that exclusively represents the needs and interests of general dentists.
