Florida men indicted on charges related to drive-by shooting

FLORIDA – Two Florida men have been indicted on federal charges in connection with an alleged drive-by shooting.

Nicholas Quinton Hanson, 32, of Lakeland, has been charged with possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, and Marcus Dewonn Mobley, Jr., 22, of Lakeland, has been charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the return of an indictment charging the pair on Wednesday.

If convicted, each faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison.

According to court documents and information presented in court, on January 30, 2023, Hanson, Mobley, and others reportedly shot 11 men in Lakeland from a blue Nissan Altima in a drive-by shooting. The victims all survived.

Crime scene technicians said they recovered 9-millimeter, .40 caliber, and 5.56-millimeter spent shell casings from the crime scene. The evidence reportedly includes DNA collected from some of those shell casings and the Altima.

Mobley’s DNA was reportedly recovered from a .40 caliber spent shell casing and the Altima. Hanson’s DNA was said to have been recovered from two spent 9-millimeter shell casings. Officers said they also seized a 9-millimeter handgun from Hanson’s home.

An indictment is a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

This case was investigated by the Strategic Pattern Armed Robbery Technical Apprehension (SPARTA) unit of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Lakeland Police Department, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Attorney’s Office for Florida’s 10^th Judicial Circuit. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher F. Murray will prosecute it.
