Fall into Vegetable Gardening course at Extension Office | LARRY WILLIAMS

Fall is a great time to plant a winter garden. One of the benefits of living in the Florida Panhandle is that we can grow vegetables twelve months out of the year. But not all vegetables can be successfully grown during our cooler fall and winter months.

If you have struggled with vegetable gardening or would like to try it out but didn’t know where to start, this course may be for you. This vegetable gardening series will be delivered via interactive video as a three part series Tuesday evenings, light refreshments and educational materials will be provided.

If you have ever considered planting a fall/winter vegetable garden, attend this 3-week series to learn all you need to get started. This workshop series, titled “Fall into Vegetable Gardening,” will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. starting September 9th and concluding on September 23th. The cost is $30 per person or $45 per couple and includes numerous handouts.

“Gardening in this area surely is different.” This is a common statement made by gardeners who have moved to our area from other parts the country. It is important to understand the correct timing in planting a garden here in Northwest Florida. Sometimes people fail in their effort to grow vegetables simply because they are attempting to grow a vegetable variety that performs poorly in our climate. Growing a garden in our sandy soils can be challenging. The pest pressure in Florida is greater as compared to many other regions of the country. The Fall into Vegetable Gardening series is designed to take the guesswork out of gardening here in Florida’s Panhandle.

UF/IFAS Extension Agents will provide the following topics as part of this vegetable gardening series:

September 9^th – Starting a Home Vegetable Garden: Expectations, Planning and Site Preparation

September 16^th – Starting a Home Vegetable Garden: Tips to Use Whether Your are Starting with Seeds or Transplants

September 23^rd – Tops and Bottoms for the Cool Season Garden: Cool Season Crops such as lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, chard, strawberries, onions, potatoes and carrots

Classes will be held at the UF/IFAS Extension Office in Okaloosa County. The office is located at 3098 Airport Road in Crestview.
