In honor of Veterans Day, students at Edge Elementary made a field of poppies in remembrance of this important day.
To give the students the history on the significance of the poppy as a symbol of peace, Edge’s MFLC first presented the book “A Poppy is to Remember” to groups of children. In particular, a poem quoted in the book, “In Flanders Fields” by Lt. Col. John McCrae was discussed with the students before embarking on an artistic project to recreate a field of poppies on a bulletin board.
Students contributed to the bulletin board by creating their own poppy from popsicle sticks, cupcake liners, and markers. On each poppy, the students wrote the name of a Veteran in their life whom they wanted to remember or honor.
