Kelly Windes, Republican candidate for Okaloosa County Commissioner District 5, has completed the petition process to qualify for the 2012 election. He is the first candidate pre-filed to run in next year’s election to have the required number of voters sign petitions and have them certified by the Supervisor of Elections office.

Windes, 65, is a lifelong area resident, Destin boat captain and businessman, and former Destin City Councilman. In the early 1990s, Windes was instrumental in developing the Destin Fishing Fleet Marina, which is preserving the independence and livelihood of area fisherman.

Windes is among four candidates running for the seat currently held by County Commissioner James Campbell, who is not seeking reelection. The election will be held August 28, 2012. A candidate must have slightly less than 1,300 registered voters sign petitions in order to qualify for the ballot by the petition method.
