5th Annual Golf Expo, 2-6 p.m.
DESTIN, Fla. – Men, Women, and Senior Golf Enthusiasts and Novices! Join the Sacred Heart Hospital Volunteer Guild for the fifth annual Golf Expo at Kelly Plantation Golf Club on Thursday, March 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. Try out the newest clubs at equipment demonstrations by leading golf club makers, and participate in presentations on improving your golf swing.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners of various skills contests, including long drive (men, senior men, women, and senior women categories), closest to the pin, pitching, and putting.

Always a great event for men and women golf enthusiasts and novices alike, this year’s Golf Expo promises to be a hole in one with special presentations by Rob Strano, Director of Golf Instruction at Kelly Plantation Golf Club, and Chip Holcombe of Cleveland Golf. This year we are featuring Cleveland Golf. They are introducing the new DST driver and will have a tour van on site. Bring your current driver and take the DST Challenge, comparing your driver to the DST by hitting balls on a launch monitor. If you wish to buy any of their clubs, you will be fitted and the clubs will be made to your specifications and assembled in the van in a few minutes.

Rob Strano will be available throughout the event to help you with your swing setup, covering stance, alignment, grip, and other basic items. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity.

Guests will also enjoy the opportunity to bid on attractive silent auction items in addition to being eligible for the many door prize drawings.

The Guild is a group of over 300 area residents who volunteer in many departments of Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. The Guild also operates the hospital gift shops and conducts fund-raising activities throughout the year. Funds raised purchase special capital equipment, assist underserved residents with mammogram fees, and provide scholarships to students seeking degrees in health care. Since the Guild was established in 2002, sixty scholarships have been awarded to area students.

Tickets are $35 each and are on sale at Edwin Watts in Destin, the gift shop at Sacred Heart Hospital, Marc’s Golf in Niceville, and at Kelly Plantation Golf Club in Destin. They will also be available at the event entrance. For more information, contact Lyman Guidry at 837-7119.

Storm Spotter Class, 7 p.m.
The National Weather Service depends on the public to report instances of damage stemming from Mother Nature’s Fury. The information supplied by residents will often help meteorologists’ determine whether the damage, or destruction was caused by a tornado, or downburst of wind.

Next month, a forecaster from the National Weather Service Office in Tallahassee, Florida will be in DeFuniak Springs to conduct a Storm Spotter class. On Thursday, March 11th at seven o’clock that night, the class will take place in the EOC Building on Davis Lane off U.S. Highway 90. Those who attend will receive a basic class in determining various climatic conditions.

The class will be “free” to the public, if your interested in attending. Contact either Cindy Wilson, or Jeff McVay at the Walton County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management and Public Safety Communications Division. That phone number is 892-8065.

For those who are interested, but cannot attend. An on-line, computer edition of the class can be taken from one’s home. The Webinar will be held on Tuesday, March 9th at seven o’clock at night. One can register for the class by going to the following internet link: www.srh.noaa.gov/tae/?n=severe

The National Weather Service and the Florida Emergency Management Agency are stepping up the public focus on “severe” weather. An emphasis is being placed on tornados. It is proven that advanced planning and increased awareness will help residents of Florida survive these deadly storms.

The months of March through May are known as the “Spring Tornado Season”. An excellent opportunity for schools, civic organizations and businesses around the Florida Panhandle to practice what they would do in the event of severe weather.

Arnie Hart Student Art Exhibition and an NWFSC Faculty Exhibition.
The galleries at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center located on the Northwest Florida State College Niceville campus will present two new exhibitions March 7 to April 18, 2010 -- the annual Arnie Hart Student Exhibition and an NWFSC Faculty Exhibition. Both exhibitions are free of charge. A preview reception honoring the artists will be held Friday, March 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Included at the reception will be presentation of awards at 5:30 p.m. to the winners of the juried student exhibition. The reception and awards ceremony are free and open to the public. Galleries are open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 90 minutes prior to most evening performances in the Mattie Kelly Arts Center.

"Come Blow Your Horn"
The Northwest Florida State College Division of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts will present the farcical romp, "Come Blow Your Horn," on March 10 through 13 at 7:30 pm in the Sprint Theater at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on the NWFSC Niceville campus.

Tickets for “Come Blow Your Horn” are on sale starting January 25 for $15 for adults and $10 for youth age 18 and younger at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center Box Office in-person, by phone at 729-6000, or online at www.mattiekellyartscenter.org. Currently enrolled NWFSC students may attend free of charge on student nights March 8 and 9 with a student ID.
