The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office wants to alert area businesses to reports of individuals circulating dollar bills that have been altered to reflect a larger denomination. So far five Destin businesses have been on the receiving end of the scam.

Deputies say businesses which receive large denomination bills should be extra vigilant as to their authenticity. Pay special attention to the color of the money and double check the holograms to ensure the cash has not been altered in any way.

The suspects behind the scam are typically making small purchases and then using a large bill to pay for them. Deputies have descriptions on two individuals. The first is described as a light-skinned Hispanic male with a bald head and muscular build, around 25 to 30 years of age. The second suspect is described as a younger white male with short brown hair parted on the side. He's about 5'6" tall and 130 pounds.

Similar altered bills were reported passed recently at businesses in Panama City Beach. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office at 850-651-7400 or Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers at 850-863-TIPS.
