From the Northwest Florida Daily News 11/17/11:

Niceville has been voted the best place to raise kids in Florida by Bloomberg Businessweek.com.

For Randall Wise, mayor for the last 40 years, they're not telling him anything he didn’t already know.

“They just found that out?” he quipped Thursday morning. “I think it’s wonderful but a lot of us local people been knowing it for a long time.

“I knew the schools were great,” he added.

In the short online piece about Niceville, the magazine cites a median family income of $71,888 and average math and reading scores of 89.71 — well above the state’ average. The population is just under 12,000.

The city, which curves along Boggy Bayou, is home to the mullet festival by the same name, according to the write-up.

That’s “mullet the fish, not the hairstyle,” the article notes.

Wise said news of the distinction was still pretty fresh, but he’d heard about it on Facebook first thing in the morning from his daughter and his granddaughter, both of which work in local schools.

“Everybody is excited about it, you know,” he said. “My granddaughter, she’s got a little boy who’s 2 and a half. She’s excited about being able to raise him here.”
